Jesse,
I ended up on your blog because I am thinking of applying to Queen’s for the MPA. I am curisous, what kind of jobs have your fellow MPA students been offered? Do many, or any intend to pursue further policy studies (eg PHD)?
Thanks.
Hi Chris,
Better information could be obtained from the people at the school. My classmates, on the whole, have been offered jobs with government agencies and departments. Of the 50 or so students, probably half are working with the Ontario government. A few, like me, are working for non-profits. Others are working for the federal government, including two in the AETP.
Some have decided to pursue further studies (med school, dentistry, law, economics, for example). I know that at least two plan to complete a PhD at some point.
Hope this helps. I expect that the type of jobs offered varies somewhat from year-to-year. The program administrators have better information than I do. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Jesse
Hi Jesse,
I, like Chris, ended up finding your site when I searched for Queen’s MPA. I was wondering if the majority of students attending the program are bilingual? I know this is required for most Federal government jobs, but I was wondering if you know of any students who found work without being fluent in both offical languages.
Thank you
Jesse,
I’m looking forward to our lunch and the Stochansky show next week.
Welcome to TO.
Paul
Hi Katie,
Many of my classmates are at least bilingual. Conversational French courses were offered during the fall (and I think the winter term) for those students who wanted to improve their ability to speak French.
I know a bunch of students who don’t speak French and found work. Me, for example. It was a problem for me in terms of applying for federal government jobs, but it wasn’t an issue for Ontario government jobs.
Let me know if you have more questions!
Jesse
