Paul Martin just announced that he plans to have a vote on the budget on 19 May 2005, which will be a matter of confidence. He promised to request the dissolution of parliament if the government loses the vote.

It's Quebec that has just come through a year of hellish student strikes over access to PSE. It's British Columbia that needs to build 25,000 new spaces. It's Alberta, swimming in cash, that is aggressively driving down tuition rates (in eerie support of Bob Rae's statement that generalized tuition reductions are "a right-wing policy"). It's Nova Scotia that lays on more universities per capita, at higher tuition rates that nonetheless manage to educate a higher proportion of the university-age population, than any other province. And they weren't invited to today's chat.
